Week 4
The sport I learned about in the Mr. Animate video is beach water polo. Which was a bit different from the water polo that I know. This is a game played in the water typically on near the beach. The object of the game is to score more goals than your opponent. The course is the size of eighteen meters by eleven meters with two goals on either side. The game is played by four players on each team with a goalie at both goals one for each team. The game is continuous which means that once a goal is scored the game is still going and you will need to get the ball to your team as fast as possible. The game is played in 3 games with 5 games being the maximum. During the game each round lasts until one team scores 5 goals winning them the game. To win the match your team needs to win 3 games there is a time limit of twenty to thirty minutes which if expired will mean the team in the lead wins. If there is a tie both teams get three shots to try to break the tie. The sport of beach water polo is an example of competitive and skill-based play. In which I mean that the game is based off of two opposing teams inherently making it an example of competitive play as shown in (Maklin and Sharp Chapter 3). It is also an example of skill based play by which I mean that it is best played by people who have practiced and trained in specific skills such as shooting the ball, blocking, and treading water rather than rewarding interesting strategies or luck based play. While when incorporating bennet foddy game design philosophy the inherent problem of all sports and games is what gives it the stakes that make it entertaining to watch. With the realm of sports it is easier to establish a connection between the stakes of the competition as it is a lot easier to see the training and dedication in a well-toned body meant to play a sport rather than the mental fortitude intense gaming rewards. It makes it easier for bystanders to understand the hard work taken to make the athletes the best in there field in the sports side of the gaming sphere even though are both arbitrary rules given to make it meaning.(Bennet Foddy’s video at 2:57)
